glossary / ICN

the umbrella research program that re-centers networking on named data instead of host-to-host conversations - ask the network for content by name, secure the object itself rather than the channel, and let any holder serve it.

ICN - Names, not addresses: the tradition's move is to fetch and verify named data wherever it lives

Names, not addresses: the tradition's move is to fetch and verify named data wherever it lives.

Etymology and backstory

information-centric as against host-centric - the diagnosis that the Internet's machinery addresses machines while its use is retrieving content. Grew from Van Jacobson's content-centric networking at PARC (the 2009 Networking Named Content paper), matured into NDN as the NSF-funded flagship, and gathered a standing community in the IRTF's ICN research group and the ACM ICN conference series.

Ecosystem

NDN and CCN/CCNx, FLIC manifests, the ICNRG drafts - and the AgentNet room itself, which is this community hosting the agent question.

In codexproof

the acronym appears once, in Design's inheritance list - content addressing and hash-derived naming (ICN and IPFS) - and the tradition's creed line, secure the object, not the channel, is the introduction's diagnosis of why HTTPS says nothing after evidence is cached or repackaged. codexproof carries the security architecture up the stack over plain HTTP and drops the forwarding plane.

"ICN moved trust from the pipe to the object twenty years ago; we move that object up the stack to agent evidence."
